Santa Cruz Bicycles History

Founded in 1993 by Rich Novak, Mike Marquez, and former professional skateboarder Rob Roskopp, Santa Cruz Bicycles is known for building rider-centered bikes. The company hand-assembles all its models in its California factory. Santa Cruz has been dedicated since its inception to producing the most high-performance mountain bikes on the planet – and many believe they have achieved that mission. The company is beloved for being large enough to have strong R&D but small enough not to be impersonal or otherwise lose sight of its customers.

Important Santa Cruz Bicycles Technology

The Santa Cruz Virtual Pivot Point (VPP)

One of the critical technologies for which Santa Cruz is known is its virtual pivot point (VPP) design. The patented concept behind VPP is to have two short links that rotate in opposite directions. This type of suspension was embraced by the company because it provides more design flexibility, enabling Santa Cruz to adjust shock rates based on the desired personality and intended use of the bike.

Santa Cruz Carbon Fiber Bike Technology

Santa Cruz Another technology that has made Santa Cruz Bicycles famous is its carbon fiber manufacturing – which has been geared toward making it more affordable for people to get their carbon frames. The higher quality carbon fiber frames are known as Carbon CC and are on the highest end build kits, while the Carbon C (the more affordable carbon version) is available on bikes with build kits below the XT / X0-1 Level.  The firm uses proprietary techniques to cut the cost while maintaining impressive rigidity and strength. To achieve that end, Santa Cruz uses a different carbon grade that results in negligible weight gain of 0.6 pounds per frame.

Santa Cruz Naming Conventions

Here's how Santa Cruz names their bikes:

AL, C, CC
These letters indicate the fame material. Aluminum (AL), C Carbon (C), and CC Carbon (CC)

D, R, S
These letters indicate the build kit level. Models denoted with an 'D' indicate the most basic build kit, while the 'R' and 'S' build kits enjoy more upgrades respectively. X01, XTR, and XX1 AXS models benefit from even further upgrades.

Reserve, RSV
Reserve, or RSV, is Santa Cruz's carbon wheelset.

Santa Cruz Nomad

2022 Santa Cruz Nomad

Nomad

Trail and freeride bike for big terrain

Highlights: 170mm front and rear travel / mixed wheels

The basic idea behind the Nomad is to create a trail bike that best resembles downhill characteristics while still delivering an excellent ride on trails and when freeriding.Every new version of the Nomad expands the layout and travel, with copious testing to ensure that maneuverability is still the core point of focus.

Shop The Santa Cruz Nomad

Dirty Details

The Nomad benefited from the evolution of the V10, with Santa Cruz applying that downhill knowledge to this trail bike in a substantial transition to a lower-link mounted shock setup.

The movement of the bike, grounding midstroke, and ability to maintain light-as-air sensitivity through minor bumps are elements that would typically only come with a downhill model – all possible because of a nearly linear shock rate. You can outfit it with either metric coil or air shocks.

By creating a design that allows people to switch out shocks as they prefer, space in the region of the bottom bracket gets tight. However, Santa Cruz's superior understanding of carbon technology has allowed it to innovate with a front triangle and swingarm that exemplify both sturdiness and smoothness.

Santa Cruz Hightower

2022 Santa Cruz Hightower

Hightower

An all mountain 29er for every situation

Highlights: 145mm rear travel / 150mm fork / 29" wheels

The Santa Cruz Hightower hits a sweet spot that is pretty tough to nail. It's a do-it-all mid-travel trail bike that is at home on death-defying descents while somehow remaining ultra-maneuverable. The Hightower nestles in between the Megatower's long travel gravity capabilities and the Tallboy's shredding prowess. When you want ultimate versatility, the Hightower's got your back.

Shop The Santa Cruz Hightower

Dirty Details

The Hightower is intended to allow the rider to take on huge mountains while maintaining lightning speed. It holds its own on the climbs and transfers and turns on the gas for the downs.

It's got a little more travel than the original model and the slacker 65-degree head tube angle pushes you to really send it in high gravity situations.

The VPP suspension’s lower-link-mounted shock soaks up all kinds of bumps and the flip chip disc allows riders to fine tune their ride by slightly adjusting the bottom bracket height.

Megatower

Big wheels, long travel, full sends

Spec Highlights: 165mm shock / 170mm fork / 29" wheels

Dirty Details

The Megatower employs a similar lower-link driven Virtual Pivot Point (VPP) suspension system as the V10 for the best tracking, bottom out resistance, and small bump, mid-stroke support.

Megatower benefits from two flip chips that allow you to dial in your ride for optimum efficiency. One is housed in the lower-link and lets you adjust bottom bracket height and rear shock progression. The other lives in the rear dropouts and provides 10mm of fore-aft chainstay adjustment to create a more stable or playful ride.

A 76-degree seat tube angle and 65-degree head tube angle combine to give you plenty of cockpit room and ultimate stability on steep, technical descents.

Tallboy

The gravity-inclined XC/trail bike

Spec Highlights: 120mm shock / 130mm fork / 29" wheels

The Tallboy is an all-mountain bike that's wonderfully efficient on long, technical climbs while still providing the Santa Cruz downhilling chops you know and love. With a few design tweaks and upgrades, the Tallboy has evolved far beyond what short-travel mountain bikes are capable of.

Dirty Details

This short-travel 29er benefits from 10mm more rear travel than previous model years, and with the addition of the lower-link VPP suspension and a few geometry tweaks, the Tallboy has become a total Bad Boy.

VPP design is so effective because it allows the chassis to be incredibly responsive while keeping the rear shock progressive via the lower-link mount. Plus, the short 430mm chainstays can be adjusted by 10mm to suit different riders and different styles.

Santa Cruz has opened the geometry up a bit on this bike so you can have some serious rowdy fun while keeping the responsive handling that makes the Tallboy such an awesome, versatile machine.

Santa Cruz Blur

2022 Santa Cruz Blur full suspension xc bike

Blur

The full throttle, full suspension XC race bike

Spec Highlights: 100-115mm shock / 100-120mm fork / 29" wheels

Don't let the rear shock fool you, the Blur is still very much an XC bike at its core. It's got all the lateral stiffness and tracking you need in the race, but adds a level of confidence-inspiring capability that might just save your butt in the rough sections.

Shop The Santa Cruz Blur

Dirty Details

The 2022 Santa Cruz Blur has undergone some big changes to cement its place as a contender for the top of the podium. Santa Cruz developed their lightest-ever rear suspension for this bike, and gave it size-specific flexstays, head tubes, and seat tubes so every rider can get pro fit and performance.

Plus the new Blur RSV models come with Santa Cruz's newest carbon rims, the Reserve 28 XC.

The Blur comes in two styles: a true XC race build, and the Blur TR, for tougher terrain and when you want a little more freedom to get a bit rowdier. Models with 'TR' or 'Trail' indicate you'll get a beefier fork, dropper post, and knobbier tires.

THE THOROUGHBRED HARDTAIL XC RACE BIKE

Spec Highlights:  100mm fork / 29" wheels

Plain and simple, the Highball is the full carbon hardtail XC race bike that is ready to grind right out of the box. But there's plenty of design elements that make this bike go above and beyond the call of duty.

Dirty Details

The Highball matches the speed and weight of the best XC race bikes out there, but benefits from added capability thanks to a few key features.

This bike is designed to be up for the longest and toughest rides while simultaneously helping riders minimize fatigue. The 27.2 seatpost, carbon frame, and special carbon layup results in a hardtail that doesn't feel so hard when you're on it. The low-angle, bridgeless seatstays connect to the seat tube below the top tube junction in order to help reduce the repetitive, small bumps on the trail.

Also, there's room for 3 bottle cages so you've got all the hydration you need to get on that podium or to the peak and back.

Dirty Details

This classic bike has been around so many years that riders have often already ridden a previous model-year or are familiar with its reputation. The bike was originally given its name because it can be single speed or geared, and it can be ridden on city roads, in the mountains, on pavement or dirt.  And for the first time ever, this legendary mountain bike is available in C Carbon frames.

Today, the Chameleon name fits better than it ever has. Originally a hardtail capable of taking on any trail, it is now ready for long adventures and any dreary condition, with a graceful yet purposeful transition to 29" or MX wheels.

You can choose single speed for either size wheels, and you can switch from one wheel to the other by using interchangeable dropouts.

Santa Cruz V10

2021 Santa Cruz V10 Downhill Mountain Bike

V10

"The most successful downhill bike in history."

Spec Highlights:  215mm shock / 203mm fork / 27.5" or 29" wheels (or both)

In mountain bike downhill World Cup history, the bike that has most often been ridden to victory is the Santa Cruz V10. This model was engineered for speed but also rideability, and with this new version, Santa Cruz has found a way to add the option of 29" wheels to this already unstoppable bike.

Dirty Details

For better, more even damping on a trip, the shock rate was adjusted by Santa Cruz for better linearity.

By improving cost-efficiency with a study of carbon lay-up and redesign of the frame, the manufacturer was able to redirect spending to make the V10 more durable and capable of seamlessly landing flat from large jumps.

The bike is also made stronger and more rigid by greater-diameter sections of the front swingarm and triangle.

This bike comes with appropriate wheels for each frame size. The smallest frames rock 27.5" wheels, while sizes M and L can run two 29ers as well as a mixed wheel setup, and size XL runs two 29ers.

Stigmata

Santa Cruz's Cyclocross / Gravel Bike

Spec Highlights: Hardtail / 700c or 650b wheel size.

The Stigmata is a cyclocross bike that was inspired by mountain bike engineering.

The majority of bike manufacturers initially started using carbon to build road bikes. Instead, Santa Cruz, believing carbon to be incredibly versatile and durable, started implementing it in mountain bikes and then downhill models. The next step was to use it for gravel or cyclocross bikes, as indicated by the carbon Stigmata.

The bottom bracket, a PressFit 30, is brand-new and only available on the Stigmata. This piece is durable and strong enough to meet the strict, proven Santa Cruz standards while also being lightweight. It also is fully compatible with any type of road bike crank.

The frame is incredibly durable – important given its intended use. You will be able to keep riding it season after season, and you will get great speed since it is lightweight at under 5 pounds.

The rear dropouts, with an intelligent sliding design, make it possible to go singlespeed or geared. You can also utilize 15.2" chainstays, which are extremely short and promote incredible stability, due to the assymetricality of the yoke.

Which Carbon Fiber Frame is better for me, the Carbon C or Carbon CC?

We get asked this all the time, and if you want the best carbon technology, the lightest and stiffest that Santa Cruz produces, and you are racing or riding at the highest levels, you will appreciate the Carbon CC.  For the rest of us the Carbon C will be the choice as it rides amazing with some weight gain (and serious cost savings).
