Keith Bontrager first started his career by building and repairing motorcycles. He didn't become known to cyclists until 1980 when he built his first mountain bike frame and founded Bontrager Cycles in Sunnyvale, California.
He experimented with different welding techniques and metals to build stronger wheels and frames for the mountain bike community. Keith eventually created the Bontrager bike fork in 1987 and expanded the Bontrager brand to handlebar stems in 1993. Soon Trek noticed, bought the Bontrager brand and elected Keith as president.
With Trek, Bontrager expanded to design handlebars, handlebar stems, bar ends, seat posts, tires, clothing, rims, and wheels. Today you can find Bontrager components and accessories for all bikes and riding styles around the globe.
Bontrager continues to collaborate with Trek to design and build high-quality bike parts, accessories, helmets, shoes, and clothing for beginners and professionals.
