How to find the right bike shoe for you

In this guide, we are looking at bike shoes, the different styles we offer, what to look for when purchasing a pair, how they can make a difference for your riding, and how to find your correct size. Once you get an idea of what you want, shop our selection of bike shoes.

Do Bike Shoes Make a Difference?

Because bike shoes are made specifically for biking and even the specific type of riding you may be doing, yes they do make a difference. Do you have to wear cycling shoes to ride a bike? Absolutely not, but they can help you stay comfortable, prevent joint pain, and ride efficiently.

The biggest benefit that nearly every cycling shoe offers is a stiff sole. This stiffness allows for efficient power transfer from your legs to the pedal and can also help your feet to not slip off the pedal on rough terrain.

While not every cycling shoe clips into your pedals, the ones that do offer some additional benefits. Among these is the ability to improve your pedaling power and efficiency because of your ability to generate power both on the upstroke and the downstroke. Other benefits of clipless bike shoes include keeping your foot locked in a consistent position, which helps mitigate any joint pain from riding, and enhanced support for your feet.

Garneau Clipless Bike Shoe

Flat vs. Clipless bike shoes

The two main types of cycling shoes are casual ones designed for regular flat pedals and clipless shoes designed to lock into clipless pedals. Yes, the name for clipless pedals is confusing as they really clip into your pedals, but they were an innovation to the toe clips and exterior cages of the past that kept your shoes attached to the pedals, hence earning the “clipless” name.

While flat bike shoes can be a tad more versatile in their use, clipless shoes are good for riders wanting to improve their riding performance and those dedicated to a specific-type of riding and getting a lot of miles in.

Bike shoes for flat pedals can be used by commuters and casual road riders, but most often, regular sneakers and athletic shoes will work just fine for those uses. Where flat bike shoes get the most use is on riders who ride mountain bikes and prefer platform pedals, offering them traction, comfort, style, and walkability.

Bontrager Road Bike Shoe

Road Bike Shoes

Typical road bike shoes are built to enhance riders’ speed and efficiency. They are typically stiffer and lighter than alternatives, maximizing pedaling power and weight reduction.

And because road warriors are not often walking off the bike during a ride, these bike shoes are usually less comfortable to walk in, but make up for it in performance benefits. Additionally, almost every road bike shoe requires riders to clip into the pedals and are thus of the clipless variety.

Five Ten Women's Mountain Bike Shoe

Mountain & Gravel Bike Shoes

On the other end of the spectrum, mountain bike shoes and gravel bike shoes are designed to be rugged enough to handle all trail conditions, while also comfortable enough for any walking needed on the trail.

Mountain and gravel bike shoes are typically more compliant than road bike shoes, as the decreased amount of stiffness allows for better comfort while walking and riding rough terrain. This type of bike shoe is also generally more durable and provides for better protection against rocks, tree limbs, or anything else that might swipe at your shoes while on the trail.

While road bike shoes are almost always clipless, mtb and gravel bike shoes can be found as either clipless or flat shoes and it’s entirely up to the rider on which type they prefer.

Bontrager Multisport Bike Shoe

Multisport Bike Shoes

Multisport bike shoes are designed for use on and off the bike, given their more “normal” look and feel. A good way to think about multisport bike shoes is as a light hiking shoe with options for clipping into pedals. These versatile bike shoes are ideal for riders who prioritize comfort on and off the bike and those who want a shoe where they can use for both casual walking after, during, or before a ride.

Bike shoe features to keep in mind

Here are a few of the features you should consider when shopping for a new pair of bike shoes.

Weight

If you’re a cyclist who typically can be found on roads and tarmac, having a lightweight shoe might be of utmost importance. If instead you’re just wanting pedaling to be easier, a lightweight shoe might be your best bet.

Stiffness

Stiffness is measured in its own specific index, with least stiff (1) to most stiff (14). Like mentioned above, a stiff bike shoe can help with pedaling power and help dampen impacts from rough terrain, but can also feel less versatile and comfortable.

Breathability/Insulation

This will factor into your decision depending on what conditions you’ll typically be riding in and what climate you live in.

Walkability

Like previously mentioned, walkability only matters as much as you think you’ll be walking before, during, and after a bike ride or how versatile you want your bike shoes to be.

What size bike shoe do you need?

Bike shoes are typically measured slightly differently than normal shoes, but some brands may list US sizes on their shoes. Like all shoes however, fits will vary brand to brand no matter the size, so if you have questions about a specific model and brand, our team is here to help.
